“Do you like playing video games?”
“About how many hours per week?”
“Is there any animation in your favorite game?”
are the typical ice-breaker questions in an EVCoder Intro to Animation workshop.

The most common response is to look around the room and observe what others are saying. Observation. That is one of the primary skills needed to be an animator. A good animator is a keen spectator, noticing everything. After some honest and somewhat honest confessions about the hours spent per week on video games, we dive into the world of animation, starting off with what exactly is animation, a brief history of animation, and within the first thirty minutes we are talking about the twelve basic principles of animation.

CLASS DETAILS

  • Squash and Stretch, Anticipation, Slow in Slow Out, Timing, Exaggeration …

We explore the twelve principles of animation through short video clips and recalling examples we have encountered in video games, cartoons, movies. Some students oblige us with a live demonstration.

  • The differences between 2D and 3D animation …

The many methods of creating an animation (stop motion, claymation, mixed media and so on) are some more of the concepts we touch upon. Each student participates and learns at his or her own level.

  • Clickteam Fusion 2.5, MIT App Inventor or an android stop-motion app ...

Most of the workshop time is devoted to actual creation of animations using Clickteam Fusion 2.5, MIT App Inventor or an android stop-motion app. Making the animations, they have fun while learning concepts such as sprites, image sprites, sprite layering, event handling and more.

  • Applications of Animation ...

After letting loose our creativity making the animations, we focus on learning about the applications of animation such as in the medical animation (diagnostic and teaching), military uses of animation, courtroom recreation of crime scene, virtual tours and much more. This shows students how animation (and programming, computer science) can be combined with practically any field they can think of.
