Online self-paced programming classes are offered for students who have attended one or more sessions of Python or Java Programming in person or through Zoom and have demonstrated the ability to work on programs and concepts by email communication between classes.
The course is hosted in the online course portal, customized for each student, and self-paced — the student can move at his or her own pace. There are no Zoom meetings. All communication between the student and instructor is by email.
Is this online class a good fit for my child?
The course is self-paced and the assignments do not have due dates. There is no tracking of how long a student spends logged in to the course. Students take the initiative to send message if needing help with a concept or program. So, it is more suitable for students who are reasonably self-disciplined and able to take charge of their learning. Read more about this here.
How it works:
The student uses an account to access the course lessons and example programs. The student attempts the example programs and programming homework and seeks help from instructor by email as needed. Feedback is provided on submitted assignments to highlight what was done well, and what could be improved. The instruction is text-based, not videos. The course content and description can be found at: Levels of Python at EVComputing, Levels of Java at EVComputing.
Policies:
- All communication is online, via schoology.com. Parent should monitor any and all communication that passes between the student and instructor.
- Requests for modifying the course content will be honored.
- Instructor will respond to student and parent messages within 24 hours of receiving the messages Monday – Friday. The only exceptions being unpredictable emergencies (power outages, personal emergencies, etc.).
- Two months option: The two-months course can be started on any day, and runs for two months from that date. For example: November 10 – January 9. November 20 – January 19.
Cost of the two-month course is $190. Re-enrollment for another two month period can be decided as the course end nears. - One month option: For students enrolled in a weekly group class scheduled to start in four or five weeks, you can choose the one month option (cost $95) in the registration below.
- The cost includes unlimited help via email. Student can proceed with the course material at his or her own pace.
- Student can take a break from the online course after informing the instructor about the start date and end date of the break. If the break-time is 5 days or longer, the days will be added to the end date of the course. A course can be “paused” for a maximum of 10 days in a two-month period.
- If a break is taken from the course without first asking for the course to be paused, the break-time will not be added to the end of the course.
- The online course is completely self-paced and there are no deadlines. So, the pace of progress will depend on how regularly the student works on the course.

FAQ about this class
Is this online self-paced class a good fit for my student?
This online class can be a good fit for:
- A student who is familiar with the EVComputing course format and has attended an in-person or Zoom group class in the past.
- A student who can describe their questions in a message, and work back and forth with the instructor via message to arrive at a working version of a program.
A factor to be considered is that the course is completely self-paced and the assignments have no formal due dates. Some students have the required self-discipline to learn independently in an online course; some might need a little supervision and guidance from a parent.
What is the setup required at home?
To participate in the online course, the only setup needed at home are a computer with a browser (Chrome suggested) and access to the internet.
How do I keep track of my student’s progress?
To track the student’s progress, the parent can login to the course portal as the student and view the assignment submission and lesson completion dates. The parent can also view any emails the student has exchanged with the teacher for help with the concepts or exercises.
The assignments and quizzes do not have any due dates. The course is completely self-paced. The student can move through the course content at their own pace.
Please note that there is no way to track how often the student logs in to the course portal or how much time is spent logged in, attempting programs or on understanding the concepts.
How do I cancel enrollment in the online self-paced course?
To cancel an enrollment, send request by email to code@evcomputing.com
- For cancellation requested within 7 calendar days of the course start date, the course cost minus $25 is refunded via PayPal.
- No refunds for cancellations requested 8 or more days after the course start date.
The course start date is day after you enroll your student in the course online.
Please note that the cost of the course cannot be used as credit toward any future enrollments.
Should I help my student with the assignments?
My student is finding the programs to be very challenging.
Some of the programs can be challenging, and are designed to have the student verbalize their questions, seek help via email, and with some back and forth communication, slowly arrive at a working program.
Is there a sibling discount?
The cost of the online self-paced course is competitive and includes unlimited help via email. There is no sibling discount for this course. We do offer a 10% discount for siblings enrolled in the weekly in-person or Zoom classes.
Can two students (siblings or friends) share an account or an enrollment?
Each account in the schoology.com online portal is set up for one student to progress through the curriculum and communicate via Schoology message when needing help.
Is the online portal a safe place for my student?
Absolutely. The online portal we use is schoology.com which is used by thousands of public and private schools in the U.S. and Canada. Each student is able to communicate only with the instructor (Mrs. Dash). All instructors need to pass a background check before Schoology.com activates the teacher account. At all times, the parent will have access to the student’s account and be aware of the username and password being used by the student.
